Position Summary
As a Utility, you will play a crucial role in supporting the efficient and safe operation of our paper manufacturing processes. This is an entry-level position with opportunities for growth within the company. You will be responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the smooth flow of materials, maintain a clean and organized work environment, and assist machine operators in the production of high-quality paper products.
Job Duties and Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to)
Actively participates in safety initiatives, adheres to all safety rules and procedures, identifies and reports potential hazards.
Keeps the paper machine and surrounding areas clean, organized, and free of debris, to prevent accidents.
Transport and stage rolls of paper and other materials using forklifts, hand trucks, and other material handling equipment.
Collect and bale scrap paper and waste materials from production areas.
Monitor and stock operating supplies such as cores, pallets, and wrapping materials.
Assist in the preparation of production materials for the rewinder and other machines.
Perform general housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, neat, and safe work environment.
Assist machine crews with tasks such as threading machines, clearing jams, and preparing for production runs.
Monitor equipment and report any issues or malfunctions to the appropriate personnel.
Perform and document routine inspections of equipment and work areas.
Learn and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines.
Assist in basic quality checks and inspections of materials and finished products.
Accurately read and record data related to production and quality.
Use measurement tools (e.g., rulers) to ensure products meet specifications.
Identify and report any potential safety hazards.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors to support mill operations.
Be willing to learn and adapt to different tasks and responsibilities.
Contribute to continuous improvement efforts within the production process.
Communicate effectively with other team members, including supervisors, quality control personnel, and other operators, to ensure smooth workflow and address any issues.
Works effectively as part of a team, demonstrating cooperation and respect for coworkers.
Must be willing and able to work rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, as paper mills typically operate 24/7.
Participate in safety meetings and training sessions.
Participate in training programs to enhance job skills and knowledge.
Assist in other areas of the production line as required.
Education, Certifications, and Experience
High school diploma or GED.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Experience operating industrial machinery.
Experience in a paper mill or with converting equipment is preferred.
Forklift certification is preferred and will be required after hiring.

Previous experience operating machinery in a manufacturing environment, preferably in the paper industry, is highly desirable.
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and a basic understanding of maintenance.
Ability to read and interpret work orders, specifications, and tape measurements accurately.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
Strong attention to detail, commitment to quality, and the ability to identify product defects.
Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
Basic computer skills for data entry and machine operation interfaces.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Communicate positively, effectively, and professionally and work as a team.
Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, and overtime as required.

Prior experience in a paper converting or finishing department is preferred.
Knowledge of different paper grades and their winding characteristics preferred.
Familiarity with quality control procedures in paper manufacturing preferred.
Work Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must be able to work in a paper mill environment which may involve exposure to noise, temperature variations (cold, heat, and humidity), dust, and chemicals.
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs., walking, climbing, stooping, pushing, and pulling for extended periods (up to 12-hour shifts).
Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Great manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
