Job Title: Shift Leader

Department: Operations

Reports To: Production Superintendent or Operations Manager

Position Summary:

The Shift Leader is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all operational activities on their assigned shift within the paper mill. This role ensures efficient production, maintains safety standards, and drives continuous improvement initiatives. The Shift Leader will provide leadership and direction to the production team, troubleshoot operational issues, and ensure adherence to quality standards and production schedules.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision:

  • Provide clear direction and leadership to the production team, including machine operators, technicians, and other assigned personnel.

  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.

  • Communicate effectively with team members regarding production goals, safety procedures, and operational updates.

  • Monitor employee performance, provide feedback, and identify training needs.

  • Ensure proper staffing levels and manage shift schedules.

Operational Management:

  • Oversee the operation of paper machines and related equipment to ensure efficient and safe production.

  • Monitor production processes, identify and resolve operational issues promptly.

  • Ensure adherence to production schedules and quality standards.

  • Coordinate with maintenance and technical teams to address equipment malfunctions and schedule preventative maintenance.

  • Maintain accurate production records and reports.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Enforce all safety policies and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for all team members.

  • Conduct regular safety audits and address any potential hazards.

  • Participate in safety training and incident investigations as required.

  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and mill policies.

Quality Control:

  • Monitor product quality throughout the production process.

  • Implement and enforce quality control procedures.

  • Identify and address quality issues, implementing corrective actions as needed.

  • Collaborate with the quality assurance team to ensure product specifications are met.

  • Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:

  • Analyze operational problems and implement effective solutions in a timely manner.

  • Utilize problem-solving techniques to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.

  • Escalate complex issues to the appropriate personnel when necessary.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and projects.

  • Implement best practices to optimize production processes and reduce waste.

  • Communication and Coordination:

  • Communicate effectively with other shifts and departments to ensure smooth transitions and information sharing.

  • Participate in production meetings and provide updates on shift performance.

  • Collaborate with supply chain and logistics teams as needed.

Qualifications:

  • · High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Pulp and Paper Technology, Engineering) preferred.

  • · Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • · Proven experience in paper mill operations, with progressive leadership responsibilities.

  • · Strong understanding of paper manufacturing processes, equipment, and quality standards.

  • · Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • · Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

  • · Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in an industrial environment.

  • · Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and production management systems.

  • · Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • · Formal leadership training or certification.

  • · Experience with lean manufacturing or other continuous improvement methodologies.

  • · Knowledge of specific paper machine technologies and control systems.

Physical Requirements:

  • · Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, which may include exposure to noise, dust, and temperature variations.

  • · Ability to stand, walk, and climb stairs and ladders.

  • · Ability to lift and carry objects up to a specified weight.
